Sonar Mapping + Kayak = Bring On The Mekong!
We’re revving up for the launch of our Laos expedition later this week and have spent recent days doing all the normal prep work: nailing down logistics, packing, gearing up… And turning one Wavesport Habitat Kayak into the ultimate high-tech sonar mapping machine!
Drilling holes in a kayak is usually looked down upon, but in this case, we let it slide. This morning, Andy installed a Hydrolite sonar mapper in one of the kayaks slated to hit the Mekong next week.
The plan is simple (kind of): Paddle and document each channel of Khone Falls on the Mekong to create a velocity, gradient and depth transect of each channel. Our hope is that the data we collect will help to protect this free-flowing stretch of river, which also happens to be the world’s most productive inland fishery.
A proposed dam, the DonSahong, would be the first on the Lower Mekong. If built it could block this important channel and block fish migration throughout Laos and beyond.
Well, our kayak is rigged and ready to go. Next step, Khone Falls… Stay tuned!
